Hair Happens

I hate my hair.

If anyone would ask me the thing I am most self-conscious about, it's my hair.

I've never had great hair. My hair is naturally curly, which is cute on other people. But not on me, because my hair is also thin AND fine. My curls aren't a pretty curl, and always have you seeing more of my scalp than you should see.




When I was a teenager, I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). The main vanity (can we call it vanity?)  issue for many women with PCOS is the weight gain. I've been able to maintain my weight gain fairly well (I mean I'll take the 30-40 pound weight gain over multiple hundreds!) The thing that has effected me most is that my hair falls out...a lot.

My bald spot was called out in high school, and I've been even more self-conscious since.

Self-conscious to the point that I never wear my hair down. (That could be that multiple hair stylists have told me that I have hair similar to that of a cancer patient. It's really awkward after that. I don't see them again once conversations like that happen...and it's happened more than once.)

Lately many people have brought up that wearing my hair pulled back all the time is unprofessional. I disagree. But I also find it difficult to be professional when you are extremely self-conscious about how you look. Even on a professional basis, I've been called out on my ever growing bald spot. Wearing my hair in buns is an easy way to help cover it up (it doesn't help fully, but it's better than baring out there.)

I spend time scouring Pinterest in the hopes of finding new updos that will work with my hair, but I haven't had much luck. While some of these styles look great, my hair is so thin and so fine that they draw more attention to my lack of hair (in my opinion).

I know that most of my issues are in my head, but when you've been called out on something multiple times, it can't help but be at the forefront of your mind when you're getting dressed.

So, internet, does anyone know of any cute, easy, professional looking updos that would work with SUPER thin, fine, balding hair? Do you think someone who wears their hair in a bun or high ponytail all of the time is unprofessional?
